Integration of Audio-Visual Aids in English Language Teaching: Challenges and Prospects

Abstract

The increasing use of audio-visual aids has reshaped English Language Teaching (ELT) by offering learners authentic input and contextual meaning for language acquisition. This study investigates the efficacy of audio-visual aids in improving the learning experience and highlights the primary challenges encountered by educators during their implementation. A quantitative survey was carried out involving 100 tertiary-level English learners of various Arts and Science Colleges in Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu. A systematic questionnaire evaluated participants' exposure, attitudes, and perceived learning outcomes related to audio-visual materials. The analysis of the data involved both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results indicated that a majority of participants experienced enhancements in comprehension, vocabulary growth, and motivation as a result of audio-visual instruction. However, technical difficulties, constrained institutional resources, and time limitations emerged as significant key challenges. The study concludes that incorporation of audio-visual aids can improve language proficiency if supported by adequate training and infrastructural facilities.
